Rust: error[E0597]: `val` does not live long enough (borrowed value dropped while still borrowed)

error[E0597]: `val` does not live long enough --> src/main.rs:14:18 | 12 | let ref_val; | ------- borrow later used here | 14 | ref_val = &val; | ^^^ borrowed value does not live long enough | 15 | } | - `val` dropped here while still borrowed
Immediate Remediation
bash
cat <<'EOF'
// Before (error)
let ref_val;
let val = String::from("hello");
ref_val = &val; // error: val dropped at end of scope

// Fix: declare val first so it outlives ref_val
let val = String::from("hello");
let ref_val = &val;
println!("{}", ref_val);
EOF
Root Cause Analysis

In Rust, a reference must not outlive the value it borrows. Here `ref_val` is declared before `val`, so `val` is dropped at the end of the scope while `ref_val` is still considered live, causing the borrow checker to reject the code.

Verification & Guardrails

  • This error occurs when the reference is used after the borrowed value's scope ends; ensure the borrowed value has a longer lifetime.
  • If you need to return a reference, change the function signature to return an owned type like String or use a lifetime parameter.
  • Verify with `cargo check` after moving declarations; the borrow checker will confirm the fix.
